I fell out of the habit of using my planner in April 2020, three weeks into lockdown when I threw my hands in the air, said, “fuck if I know”, and just started vibing on TikTok like the rest of America. I never really picked it back up, even as the world reopened. Sure, I bought stuff and restarted with good intentions… hell, I even spoke at a planner conference, but truthfully I had become a Google Calendar convert. It felt redundant to copy everything over to paper, especially when my work life (which… was omnipresent over my whole life) was a blur of constantly changing meetings and priorities. Friends? Family? If I had the energy after my commute. I felt ruled by the constant dings of notifications and reminders. Oh, Burnout… is that you my old friend?
When I got laid off in the fall of 2024, it was the first time since that 2021 tailspin that I truly had an empty calendar. I’m not going to give you the LinkedIn Thought Leader diatribe about how it was a blessing in disguise. It suuuuuucked. Finances were tighter. The job market was not friendly. It was scary. But, I did three things that “prepared me for the luck” as Ina Garten would say:
- I got a career coach who specializes in burnout recovery
- I networked like I was fresh out of college
- I got myself a planner
The combination of those three things helped me prioritize and focus on telling everyone what a badass I am and they should hire me, AND reminding me that I am a badass and can do almost anything.
I’m happy to say that I was able to start 2025 in a new position, still in music marketing and digital media, while also practicing boundaries and keeping tabs on all aspects of my life. I’m not saying it was ALL the planner’s doing, but there is something really powerful about being able to see the changes you’ve made week over week.
All that to say, that one of my goals for 2025 is to fall back in love with planning. My brain is happier, it scratches a crafty itch, and I miss aspects of the community I was once so involved in. Part of falling back in love with planners is also falling back in love with blogging. Long form content is still my favorite to make and consume, and this sparkly/sweary corner of the internet remains to function as my digital trapper keeper full of weird projects and library books.
I have a lot of things to catch up on and work through in these boxes of craft supplies. Let’s get to work.
